Why did Photoshop introduce Generative Fill?

Because even Photoshop got tired of everyone asking it to turn their sketches into masterpieces!

The Case for Open Data: A Roadmap for a Data-Driven Future

My latest article:

Open data is revolutionising the way we access and use information. From public transport schedules to global health statistics, freely available data provides a wealth of resources for innovation and informed decision-making.

This valuable commodity can enable researchers to discover new insights, help policymakers to make more evidence-based decisions and empower citizens to understand more about the world around them.

But the real value of open data is unlocked when we ensure transparency, accessibility, and collaboration. It’s about fostering an environment where data is available, reliable, and useful.

Useful Nuggets of Information

My weekly tips from around the web to get you thinking.

1. Drone-delivered dinners transform Shenzhen’s skyline.

Shenzhen, one of China’s most vibrant, bustling cities, is now dotted with drones buzzing overhead. The renowned food delivery company, Meituan, has achieved an incredible feat — they have rolled out a drone food delivery service throughout the city. (MIT)

2. Google’s ad magic: when AI becomes the creative genius.

Google, ever the innovator! Their latest brainchild? AI tools for ad creation, taking cues from ChatGPT and DALL-E. It’s a whole new approach to digital advertising. Advertisers will get ‘creative freedom’, and Google will boost revenue. (Wired)

3. Taming the crypto wild west: a plan for more robust regulation.

The global securities watchdog, Iosco, urged bolder action in regulating cryptocurrency markets, presenting a plan to address conflicts of interest and improve disclosure and governance. This follows the failure of the crypto exchange FTX. (FT)

4. Meta’s record EU fine: the cost of doing business in the EU.

Meta Platforms is slapped with a record €1.2B fine by EU regulators for illegally transferring user data to the U.S., violating GDPR rules. While Meta intends to appeal, the fine signals the EU’s stern stance on privacy violations. At the same time, Meta probably sees this as the ‘cost of doing business’, and not much will change in the future. (WSJ)

Photoshop meets generative AI.

Adobe’s new beta feature in Photoshop, Generative Fill, uses AI to create and enhance designs. Trained on licensed content, it’s enterprise-safe and optimises prompts based on your Photoshop file. (The Verge)
